What's hidden behind the mask:
Personality: Zatanna is immencely pleased with her abilities, though at the same time wakes up screaming from nightmares about them going haywire. Though she is immencely flirty, she doesn't usually get very close to anyone, except for the relationship she had with her father. That may be the reason for this behavior, because it mainly manifested after his death.
She also is very overconfident on the outside, but inside, she is unsure whether she belongs in the big leagues with heroes such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Zatanna feels as though it is her duty and her calling to assume her rightful place as one of the earth's most powerful magicians. She's just not sure she's strong enough to do it.
History: Born in Gotham City, Zatanna Zatara was the unlikely result of a union between Giovanni "John" Zatara, a famous stage magician and illusionist, and the mysterious Sindella, a descendant of Atlantean stock and a member of the Homo Magi race. Sindella supposedly died in childbirth, though the whereabouts of her body are unclear.
Daddy's little girl, Zatanna helped in her father's act from a very young age, and quickly began to pick up the art herself. When she was a teenager, a man calling himself John Smith came to John Zatara for guidance and training in escape artistry. Zatanna and Smith were fast friends, but after his training was complete they did not see each other for many years.
John Zatara died from an unexpected brain aneurysm when Zatanna was twenty years old. Devastated with grief, she took over his act and began to make a name for herself in the field of stage illusion and escape artistry. Around this time, she was rescued by Batman when a criminal skeptic attempted to frame her. It didn't take long for her to realize that Batman was really John Smith, the companion of her youth, and that Batman/John was also wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne.
About a year later, Zatanna's Homo Magi heritage suddenly kicked in, and she found herself capable of real magic. Using her father's occult library, she managed to begin training herself in these newfound abilities. It was a great help when she discovered Shadowcrest, an abandoned extradimensional manor left to her by her father, where she quickly set up shop.

ooc; This is a post about a much younger Zatanna from another site I frequent. If this does not work for you guys, I can type up a new one where she is in her twenties instead of teens.
"Rood tuhs!" Zatanna said, waving her hand after she walked through the door. It shut with a loud bang as she threw her bookbag onto her bed. Her father was getting on her nerves. It was always do this, do that. Don't do this, don't do that. It was always something. Plus, he never let her go out with friends! What a drab.
She huffed in frustration, sitting herself down on her bed, not worrying about wrinkling her school uniform. Kingston Academy. Why on earth her father wouldn't let her go to public school, she had no idea. That man had more money than he needed. If that was true, why on earth did they live in a rinky-dink appartment in the middle of the city? Maybe it was because he worked nearby as a stage magician. He could do much more than that, and Zatanna had no clue why he did it. If it were up to her, she would be working alongside him, or using her magic for more important things.
Speaking of important things... Zatanna unzipped her bag and pulled out the textbooks and notebooks inside. Her father had yelled at her once again to do her homework right away. She hated that man with a passion, despite the fact that he was her father. Picking up the books, she walked them over to her desk, which sat right across from her bed. There was barely two feet between them. Just enough room for her to squeeze between them and sit on the chair that sat there. Her father just had to save his money. Some nice things once and a while wouldn't hurt though, right?
Hours later, she was still working on homework when she heard sirens wailing through the streets. Getting up quickly, she rushed over to her window just as a gust of wind blew through the open window, accompanied with the sound of crushing metal. "What's going on out there?" She mumbled to herself as she watched as a man procured a giant gust of wind, flipping numerous cop cars over and sending three men into the air. She was about to cast a spell to levitate them down safely, but thankfully, some yellow and red-clad boy rushed to their aid before she had the chance.
Her eyes widened in fascination as he bantered with the villain, barely hearing what they were saying from her room on the second floor of the appartment complex. Suddenly, the boy was crouched over, seemingly in pain. What was happening? A couple of leaves blew through the air and were immediately averted from the area around the kid that looked to be about her age. Then, a blonde girl rode up on a boulder. Wow, this was amazing! Two super heroes, right outside her window! But then, the villain seemed to do something to the girl, much similar to what he was doing to the boy. Zatanna's eyes narrowed as she thought, trying to figure out what was going on.
The man seemed to be manipulating the air, just as he had done when he blew the cop cars and various men into the air. Maybe he was creating a vaccum so they could not breathe! That would explain the sudden cease of the boy's bantering. "Brag em rof elttab!" She whispered, stepping back from the window. A cloud of blue smoke seemed to eminate from the floor and swirl around her. When it dissipated, Zatanna's uniform was replaced with a black tailcoat, black shorts, white shirt, and yellow vest. She cast a last look behind her to make sure her father wasn't going to burst through the door and forbid her to help them. Good. He wasn't there. She climbed up to the window and jumped out. "Etativel!" Just as before, a cloud of smoke appeared, but this time it slowed Zatanna's descent so she wasn't falling anymore, but more gliding to the ground.
When her feet were firmly planted, she stomped up to the trio behind the long-haired man. "Nruter ria ot sti lamron etats!" She shouted behind him just before a gust of wind blew through the street, returning normal air to the two Titans. "You're not the only one who can manipulate the elements." Zatanna smiled, crossing her arms before her as she waited for him to retaliate.
