The chair she sat in was pushed against the wall beside the bed. The position offered her both an easy eye on the door, and allowed her to watch Jonathan without much strain. Anna, in her usual police uniform, flipped a page in the book she was busying herself with, the very same that Jonathan had been reading that day in the bookstore. She knew she was taking a risk being there, and perhaps if Jonathan was awake he may not approve her presence, but she’d let her feelings bring her there. She could stand the three months of him being in a coma, albeit she didn’t necessarily enjoy it, but having found out through the grapevine of security guards and Gotham police of Jonathan being shot, she decided to come.
Coming wasn’t a hard thing to accomplish either. Arkham Asylum was currently going through a shortage of security staff and the police department had offered to help staff the place. Police who wanted to make a little extra cash and didn’t mean the heightened danger of the infamous asylum would volunteer. Anna had done so, claiming that with her boyfriend on a research trip, she wanted to make a little extra to treat him when he got back. And who knew, maybe she would. Her eyes strayed from the page to Jonathan. Landing the job of watching over the slumbering inmate hadn’t been a challenge to get either. In fact, she hadn’t even had to ask. The job was basically given to her. She frowned, she was GCPD, expendable. She figured that because she wasn’t part of the inner circle of security staff it would be fun to give her the job that would scare her. No one knew when Scarecrow was going to wake up, or what mood he was going to be in.
She smiled a little at that. That was an ongoing mystery, even when he wasn’t in the asylum. She went back to reading. The room smelled of antiseptic and the noises of the medical equipment were the only things that interrupted the silence.
