How long had it been since she’d left her friends and family at the mansion? The first few months she was keeping track of the days, but the longer she remained away the less it seemed important anymore. Nightmares or perhaps they were visions, of things she didn’t understand scared her so much that to ensure she wasn’t a threat to her family it meant leaving them and her life at the Institute behind. Although not an easy choice, it was for the best; Jean had to believe that.
There was no denying how much she missed them however, and considering she’d grown up at the school there was no way she wouldn’t miss them. They were everything to her and as much as leaving hurt, staying and risking them getting hurt by her own powers would devastate her even more. Each day of her self imposed exile was a day of training in the apartment she was calling home for the past few months. Her nightmares usually revolved around her losing control of her abilities and becoming something so…Dark…
I won’t let that happen. I can’t.
Recently the nightmares occurred less frequently than before and some nights the telepath even managed to get a full night’s sleep. Still, she waited before allowing herself to get excited at the possibility she would finally be able to return home.
One night; two nights; one week; two weeks…nothing.
It was time to return home.
The night she left it was raining heavily and there were no goodbyes. Instead a note was left for those close to her, apologizing for her departure but insisting it was also for the best. Now as she pulled up the driveway to the mansion, bringing the borrowed X-vehicle to the garage, there were seconds to spare before sunrise. The pathetic fallacy was just another thing that made this feel right. When she left the weather mirrored the sadness felt and now with her return, it was a brand new day.
