Giles was regretting his decision to come out before patrol. It was still very dark out in the streets of London, even if it was not as late as it could be. The sky overhead was clouded and rain was falling lightly over the streets. And all those walking over them.
Like the Watcher.
The rain was not heavy enough to beat against his head or make itself known with heavy plots of water, instead falling in a steady mist that was more than capable of soaking through clothes and down to the bone. As Giles had quickly found out.
All this because he had a stupid idea.
Hands buried in his pockets, he moved down the empty streets as quickly as he could without slipping in a puddle and falling over. The last thing he needed was to embarrass himself on top of being soaked and miserable. Not that there was anyone around to see: everyone with half an ounce of sense was locked away in their homes where it was safe and dry and warm.
The worst part was he knew he would have no time to warm up. He would get to the store, buy what he wanted, get back home fast enough to hide it and then have to go out with Faith on patrol for demon and vampire activity.
Why this could not wait for the morning or the next day was beyond him. Sometimes he got things in his head that he could not get out, and he simply had to act on the instincts that followed. In this case, he was out to get a surprise for his new house guest, in an effort to welcome her to this new home and strange situation.
But at least rain was the most he had to worry about.
