What's hidden behind the mask:
Personality: Often seen as aloof, emotionless, or untouchable due to the sheer fact of her preceding reputation, Natasha is a woman of many layers. Having had such a tumultuous past, she tends to prefer to stay distant and, often times, remains outside of the normal ideal for having and making friends. This is partly due to the fact that many friends she gained in the past are now dead (sometimes by her own hands) and due to her not having the proper social skills to grants an open, honest friendship with people. Being a spy and a killer most of your life tends to do that.
Quiet to most people she meets for the first time, Natasha is a honest person, or at least she tries to be. She is of the mind that withholding information, depending on what it is and who she is telling, is not completely considered lying. As stated before, she does not make friends easily, but to those she is a friend to, Natasha will risk life and limb for them, often going to the extreme to ensure their safety.
On the business side of things, she is a no nonsense kind of woman. When she says she'll do something, it will be done, and no power in heaven, hell, or earth will stop her from accomplishing her goals.
History: Born circa 1928, Natalia "Natasha" Romanova was apparently orphaned as a child when she was trapped in a burning building during an early attack on Stalingrad by enemy forces. Ivan Petrovitch Bezukhov, a Soviet soldier, found Natasha in the inferno and rescued her. Although Ivan kept a close eye on Natasha as she grew, by the late 1930s she had attracted the attention of Soviet intelligence, which began her training. In 1941, she was almost brainwashed into serving the ninja clan the Hand, but was saved by Ivan, Logan, and Captain America. Following World War II, Natasha was recruited to become part of the Black Widow Program, a team of elite female sleeper agents. Among the Widow’s instructors was the Winter Soldier, formerly Captain America’s sidekick Bucky (James Barnes); Natasha studied as a ballerina to cover for her true occupation. The Soviet state eventually arranged for Natasha to marry Alexi Shostakov, a champion test pilot. After a few years of a happy marriage, the KGB faked Shostakov’s death in a rocket test; grief for Shostakov drove Natasha’s resolve deeper and she continued her education with the Red Room Academy, finally being appointed the title of the Black Widow.
In one assignment, Natasha helped American mercenary Danny French steal a unique energy globe from Project: Four, though French absconded with the globe, betraying their employer, munitions magnate Damon Dran. Subsequently, when
Logan, his memories of their past relationship suppressed by Weapon X, traveled to the USA following his recruitment by Canada’s Department H, Natasha protected him from Hydra assassins, as did his former intelligence comrades Nick Fury and Carol Danvers. Natasha and Logan ended up on opposite sides when he joined Danvers and pilot Ben Grimm to steal a Russian asset she oversaw, the top-secret Red Storm Project. She also trained fellow Russian operatives, including Boris Bullski, who became her partner in various assignments.
After Russian scientist Anton Vanko left Russia to work with Iron Man (Tony Stark), Natasha’s superiors sent her and another operative, Boris Turgenov, to assassinate both men. When Turgenov stole Vanko’s Crimson Dynamo armor, both Turgenov and Vanko died in battle but Natasha escaped. Later, feigning repentance, she romanced Stark long enough to steal his experimental anti-gravity ray. With it, she performed several acts of sabotage against the USA until Iron Man deactivated the device. Her cover blown, she romanced and manipulated the outlaw archer Hawkeye (Clint Barton) into working with her, helping him enhance his archery arsenal with high-tech arrows. The pair attacked Iron Man, who deflected one of Hawkeye’s explosive arrows, its impact felling Natasha and ending the battle when Hawkeye rushed her to safety. While recovering, she persuaded Hawkeye to attack her superiors’ next target, Williams Innovations, but Spider-Man’s intervention drove Hawkeye away. The idealistic Hawkeye’s growing influence upon Natasha led her to rebel against her communist superiors, who extorted her into returning to action with a new costume and weapons, but she and Hawkeye again failed against Iron Man.
After briefly being brainwashed into fighting the Avengers, she returned to Russia and broke all ties with her former superiors. Returning to the USA, she divided her time between freelance work for Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. and, though it started as informal assistance on missions, Natasha eventually did become a full fledged member of the Avengers.

It was late on a Friday afternoon and the school gym was empty. Most students wouldn’t stay past the final bell on a weekend if they didn’t have to, but Natasha was an exception. She had been there easily for over an hour already, getting herself back into the rhythm of training that she had, in her opinion, been incredibly lax with for the past year and a half. Clearly, moving halfway around the world did not relieve a person of their troubles or dangers. It just gathered new ones. Currently, she was furiously working away at a heavy punching bag, alternating between a series of rapid punches and kicks.
Normally, Natasha would sink into the motions, allowing her mind to clear as her body remembered the techniques, like when she danced. But today was different. She couldn’t get her mind clear. Every once and a while, she would close her eyes and the images of what recently happened would flash in her head. Laura struggling to talk after her chest was blown out, Arcade laughing incessantly, her trying to stop Felicia from bleeding to death…
She was not one who tended to linger on things, no matter how upsetting they were. She had been raised not to. Ivan told her that doing so would often get a soldier killed. Which was why this infuriated her so much! Every time she’d see an image, her strike would be off, causing her momentary pain. This would enrage her, which in turn, made her linger on those memories, and the cycle would repeat itself over and over. If she had been faster and smarter, if she had been stronger, if she hadn’t hesitated or been afraid… then half of her mistakes wouldn’t have happened. She wouldn’t have had to wash her friends blood out from underneath her fingernails. And, if it wasn’t rage that was causing her enough problems, there was also the realization that Laura died not knowing her. The real her. She died knowing a lie, calling her Natalie. That was a name and identity she was quickly starting to hate.
Letting out a rage-filled yell, Natasha lashed out at the punching bag with a furious one-two punch combination, followed quickly by a hard and direct side kick, striking with her shin. The sound of the impact bounced off the walls as the bag itself shuddered from the hit. Exhausted, both physically and emotionally, she slumped to the floor, panting to regain her breath, blood pounding in her ears. Only then did she realize that her knuckles were bleeding through the light bandages on her hands. Her legs were probably going to be bruised by tomorrow morning. She sighed, feeling defeated. Her dance instructor was going to kill her.
