A chilly rain poured down in the city of New York, making it sparkle and shine. Of course this was just a coating, a shiny coating over the real grim of the city. Anyone who lived there could tell you this city was did not sparkle or shine, especially in the slum areas, it could be down right nasty. Murders, muggings, and mayhem was the prescription of just about every night in the rough parts of town, and plenty of heros patrolled that area. And that is partially what brought Tessa to one of the more well to-do areas of the city. Alright, so it was a rich part, not just middle class but at least upper middle class, on the outskirts of the city. Tessa was in her black suit. The one with the helmet that looked like it had glowing, slit like eyes and a nose and ears, lending to the nickname, The Night Fox. She had grown rather fond of it since the first time she heard it, and she figured it was about time to dropped the Dark Angel gig for a new one since this was her permanent home now, and she wasn’t going to be going back to being a rebel leader against an invading alien army.
Tonight found the young woman crouched on the top of a roof in the upscale side of New York City. Why was she here, in the cold rain on a rooftop, watching a family of four eat dinner. She sighed as she watched them, glancing down at her right hand. She tugged her glove off and looked down at the ring on her ring-finger. It was the same one that had fooled Hal for a moment when they had first met, the one that looked like a Green Lantern ring but wasn’t. Tessa’s was still heavily cloaked since she didn’t want it being exposed too soon. Of course the question still was, why was she here instead of at home. It was because of this family, well really the recent death of the man's father who was a high powered political leader of an out of power group in the country of Georgia. The dead man’s wife had sought her out, hearing of The Night Fox from various sources. Tessa had begun to learn why keeping her face hidden from view was a good idea, but not for the reasons most heroes hid it. She hid it to keep herself safe from her clients and those whom her clients hired her to protect them from.
Most of her cases where usually an ex of some sort. The problem of women trying to get out of bad situations only to be tracked down by the estranged man was far more common than Tessa had ever guessed, but sometimes she she got something with a bit more bite to it, like the case she was on right now. her job wasn’t to find out who was behind anything, but simply to make sure this man lived out the week, his kids were second priority and his wife was third. She knew the organization behind the politician's murder would love to take out the entire family, but would settle for just the husband.
A flash of lightning over head didn’t even phase the universe jumper. Her suit kept her warm and dry, but she hadn’t figured out a wiping system to keep the rain from making it a tad hard to see out of her helmet. What made her glance up at the sky and mentally kill the lights on her helmet was the thunder. It wasn’t that there wasn’t any, it was that it sounded too short for the flash of lightning before it. Black mist slowly swirled behind Tessa as the disc on her back split down the middle and slid open. The mist poured out then and began to form into large, black feathered, angel wings, her signature look. once they had formed she stretched them out and stood up, her hand reaching for the hilt of a sword except there seemed to be no blade attached to it. The second time the lightning flashed, all the lights in the house went out, just as Tessa had thought they would. Tessa lept off the edge of the roof and glided towards the dining room window of the target house, closing her wings over her head to crash through the window. She landed in a roll, dismissing her wings at the same time so she didn’t roll over them and because there just wasn’t room for them inside the house. She pulled the hilt from it’s holder and the distinct sound of metal against metal was heard as it unfolded. She didn’t turn on her helmet yet, because she was pretty sure...The lights suddenly flooded back on, causing the family of four to hold their hands up against the now blinding effect of the light, but Tessa had expected this and turned her helmet on which put a filter over her eyes, dimming the lights and allowing her to see as her eyes readjusted to the lights.
”Back into that corner. No the one away from the window,” she ordered the family as rather cliche looking ninjas swarmed into the room. She looked around her, but with the odds of five, no, seven on one, Tessa was far from certain she could pull this gig off without someone dying; she just hoped it wasn’t the man. One of the ninjas threw a star at her, but she blocked it with her sword, a grim smirk on her face. They were going to have to try harder than that.
