It was all over the news. On TV, in the paper, and on the internet. It was only a matter of time before one of the teachers found out.
Koyuki had the news on, but wasn't paying attention. She looked around the kitchen for things she could cook with, to make the breakfast she'd gotten used to, but couldn't find the things she wanted. She sighed and took out a few eggs and some cheese, then looked around for the right pan. She found it, setting it on the stove so it would be ready after she finished preparing the eggs. She cracked two into a small bowl, whisking them with a fork. She placed the fork in the sink before turning on the stove and pouring the eggs into the pan. She waited for a moment before flipping the eggs, then began folding them over, sprinkling some shreaded cheese in as she folded. She found cooking relaxing, and after what happened earlier that week, she needed the distraction.
She finished making the omlette and slid it onto a plate, sprinkling more cheese on top before grabbing a fork and heading to the dining room nearby. She looked up at the television, wondering what the weather would be like. She wanted to go shopping for some new clothes. She didn't have enough to really get by here, not yet. She cut a bite off the omlette and stuck it in her mouth. She ate it thoughtfully, then reached for the salt. She'd forgotten to put any in while she was cooking it. After salting the omlette, she tasted it again. That was better, but... Ah, pepper. She reached for it, shaking a little bit over the eggs. Just enough to enrich the flavor.
She hadn't been paying attention to the news for the last minute or so, but something came on that caught her eye. A female reporter... In the same spot she'd been when she... When she killed that man... Her fork stilled, about six inches from her mouth, before she slowly lowered it. Her eyes widened. She'd wanted to forget about this! Why did they have to keep showing it?!
"There has been a new development in the case of the man found dead in New York with four crystals through his torso. The crystals were positively identified as those created by a mutant."
The shot changed from a female reporter in the bad side of the residential district of New York, where the man had been found, to a shot of an older man wearing a lab coat in a high-tech lab of some sort.
"We have identified the crystals as Quartz, and an uncommon variety at that," he said. "Strangely, the crystals were infused with the DNA of what seems to be a young female mutant. We have positively identified the X-Gene in the DNA strands that were extracted from the crystals. The only thing I can see is that this was either done by a mutant who's powers just manifested, a foreign mutant, or one who refuses to register, as the DNA doesn't match any in the mutant database."
The shot changed again, showing another man with a shard of crystal under a microscope. The female reporter's voice could be heard over the images, as the audio form them had been silenced.
"It is not yet known where this mutant is from, but it is only a matter of time before the culprit is caught. Back to you Kevin."
